What Are Root Canals?

An endodontic treatment, or more commonly known as a “root canal,” is needed in individuals whose inside of their tooth has died, has inflammation, or is infected. This can happen for a number of reasons but a primary way to prevent this sort of infection is to have good oral hygiene and regularly visit your Edmonton dentist.

Root canal therapy is the process of clearing out the infection. The procedure can be generally comfortable for a patient, but you may experience some discomfort while the tooth is recovering.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

The tooth being treated is frozen and isolated using a rubber dam. Tiny files are used to remove the infected pulp tissues of the tooth. Irrigation is used to help kill bacteria inside the tooth chambers and rotary files are used to help clean and shape the inside canals of the tooth.

Once all the bacteria is cleaned out a rubber material is used to seal the canals within the tooth. It is then restored with a filling. A crown (cap) is always recommended to help restore strength to the tooth after its been root canal treated. Without a crown, the tooth runs the risk of breakage or fracture in the future, and extraction may be inevitable.

It is common to experience sensitivity in the days that follow. However, once your tooth is completely healed you will be able to resume eating and drinking normally.

There is not much decision when faced with a root canal. They are often very painful and when left untreated can cause further oral health issues. To prevent this procedure maintain good oral hygiene and visit the dentist regularly. If you are concerned you may need a root canal, be sure to visit our root canal dentist in Edmonton as soon as possible.
