Dental Habits You Should Stop

We know how important it is to brush and floss, but do you know what dental habits you should avoid? Some may not seem like an issue, but they can actually cause a negative impact on your teeth with lasting consequences.

Grinding and Clenching

Are you stressed? Do you frequently wake up with pain in your jaw or teeth? How about finding yourself clenching your teeth throughout the day? Grinding and clenching your teeth are terrible habits that are often the result of stress. However, this habit can cause chips, cracks, and wear away your teeth. If you clench your teeth at night, try wearing a mouthguard to help protect your teeth. If you struggle to stop this habit during the day, try constantly reminding yourself to relax your jaw or try some sugar-free gum to keep your jaw busy.

Nail Biting

Another common habit for those who are stressed or nervous, biting and chewing your nails can cause your teeth to crack, chip, and become damaged. It is also common for nail biters to encounter jaw problems because of the position their mouth needs to be in to bite their nails. To help overcome this habit try a specialized nail polish that is bitter or spicy to the taste. It is designed to help people stop biting their nails as a gentle reminder to stop.

If you have a trigger that starts the biting, try to avoid those moments. Also, work to reduce stress in your life. This can improve both your mental and physical health.

Ice Chewing

Many people find themselves unconsciously chewing ice. This is another habit that can lead to cracks, chips, and damage to your teeth, requiring future dental work. If you struggle with this habit, try drinking from a straw or simply drinking chilled beverages.

Cut the Snacking

Often times when we snack we focus on sugary items. The more sugar you snack on the more you are creating an environment in your mouth to promote bacteria and chemicals that break down the enamel of your teeth. Try cutting the snacking or focusing on snacks that are low in sugar. When you do have sugary items, follow up with brushing your teeth or a large glass of water to wash down the sugar.
